Daniel Bui
Throughout his career, Daniel has acted for both insurers and large corporates, as well as “mum and dad” plaintiffs, giving him a strong understanding of all perspectives to a claim.
Daniel’s background is a mix of general insurance and liability matters including public liability, workers’ compensation, motor vehicle accidents, total and permanent disablement (TPD) claims, general liability, plus property and recovery work.
Today, he most commonly acts for supermarkets, hotels, real estate agents, cleaning companies, security companies, service stations and financial advisors on public liability matters. Daniel can be relied upon to manage evidence, experts and witnesses, and then find practical ways to resolve matters in a commercially sensible fashion.
Daniel is a master at straightforward and clear communication, while being focused on practical outcomes. He always makes sure clients are kept well informed on progress and is skilled at pushing claims along and resolving issues efficiently. Most importantly, Daniel always balances the legal detail with what makes sense commercially and strategically.
He is also strongly committed to giving back. Recently, Daniel spent two years volunteering at the Inner City Legal Centre, contributing three to four hours per month of his own time to help the local community.
Daniel graduated from Macquarie University with a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in finance) and a Bachelor of Laws. He was admitted to the Supreme Court of NSW in early 2018.
Personal Awards/ Accreditations
Examples of matters where Daniel has been instrumental:
- ACT Supreme Court – acted for the first defendant in a complicated multi-party case involving four defendants, with HBA’s client facing the highest potential risk. Early settlement talks didn’t eventuate, so Daniel prepared the case for trial. On the first morning of the hearing, the plaintiff withdrew the claim, and our client covered only part of the plaintiff’s costs, which was a strong win in our favour.
- ACT Supreme Court – handled a case where it was unclear if the alleged incident even happened. Thanks to Daniel’s detailed discovery and a deep dive into historical employment, medical, and phone records, Daniel uncovered major gaps in the plaintiff’s version of events. The case ran for five days, with the plaintiff cross-examined for two of them. Judgment was in favour of our client against the plaintiff.
- NSW District Court – acted for a major national retailer in a slip-and-fall claim arising in a trolley bay area. Following a detailed CCTV analysis, we identified that water had been left on the floor by a third-party trolley contractor, supporting a clear causation case and apportionment of liability. The matter resolved with the contractor providing a full indemnity to our client, delivering a strong commercial outcome.
