“Our people are our number one priority. Some may argue that’s misguided because our clients are the ones keeping us in business.

But here’s the thing… happy motivated people, with a growth mindset, will take care of our clients in the best way possible. Take care of your people and they will take care of your clients”

A Total Rewards Framework

Our philosophy to reward, remuneration and recognition centres around flexibility, opportunity and individuality.

HBA embraces the fact that each person is unique in what they need out of an employer. That’s why we don’t subscribe to a “one size fits all” model. We encourage honest and transparent conversations around our reward offering and bring our philosophy to life via a tailored approach for each person.

  • A Total Rewards Framework

    Financial Reward

We recognise that salary matters, and it’s a priority to ensure our people are well compensated. We are constantly analysing local external market data to inform salary decisions.

Beyond salary, we offer paid professional memberships and qualifications, Salary Continuous Insurance, Life & Total Permanent Disability Insurance, novated leases and the opportunity to achieve annual financial bonuses.

HBA also offers entitlements beyond statutory requirements such as parental leave for both primary and secondary caregivers, community volunteering leave, and study leave.

  • A Total Rewards Framework

    Diversity, Inclusion & Empowerment

Diversity and inclusion at HBA is considered a business imperative. D&I principles drive how we work together, how we do business, how we serve our clients and how we contribute to our communities.

We foster an environment that enables our people to thrive and achieve their “whole life” goals.

Our workplace is where you are empowered to grow and make decisions, and your voice is always heard.

We recognise that diversity comes in many forms and we’re stronger because of it. Our people and leaders reflect a mix of backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences, and we embrace the unique perspectives each person brings. We fiercely protect diversity of thought as a driving force behind our best ideas and our ongoing success.

  • A Total Rewards Framework

    Family friendly

We appreciate that work is just one part of your life. Parents and carers are supported with our family friendly policies.

We go above our statutory obligations because we recognise you often have more important priorities outside of the office.

  • A Total Rewards Framework

    Flexibility

We challenge ourselves to think differently about how work gets done in a flexible and agile way, while still meeting the needs of clients, and retaining our culture of learning and collaboration.

Our flexible working policies foster work/ life balance and support your individual preferences and needs, while balancing the delivery of high-quality service to our clients.

  • A Total Rewards Framework

    Health & Wellbeing

Your health and wellbeing matter. That’s why we offer a holistic mix of support.

HBA covers the cost of your annual flu vaccinations and skin checks.

Our free Employee Assistance Program is available 24/7, offering professional counselling services to employees and their immediate family members.

We have certified mental health first aid support at all offices, as well as initiatives such as employee funded extra leave, and a day off on your birthday.

  • A Total Rewards Framework

    Professional Development & Continuous Growth

You are in the driver’s seat of your career journey, shaped by self-discovery, clarity of purpose and continuous growth.

Our “Four Es” philosophy provides an innovative, holistic framework to support your development. We combine meaningful Experiences that build capability, curated Education through formal and self-paced learning, purposeful Exposure that builds networks, visibility and relationships and an Environment that fosters a learning culture.

Our “One HBA” model is structured into practice groups but built on accessibility, offering each employee support and opportunity through collaborative, open and team-influenced learning.

We are committed to supporting your formal professional development by offering a range of technical, professional and leadership development opportunities.

  • A Total Rewards Framework

    Promotion Pathways

We understand that some people need direction and assistance in defining and creating their career journey. HBA has established capability frameworks that clearly define the criteria for stepping up, while also offering support resources. This ensures our people have total clarity over promotion pathways and what they need to do to get there.

  • A Total Rewards Framework

    Celebrating Moments that Matter

At HBA, we are all about celebrating the moments that truly matter… welcoming a new child, hitting a career milestone, or sharing in a standout client result. When something worth celebrating happens, we make it feel special.

HBA creates moments that bring people together, build connection and celebrate what makes our culture truly unique. From social events to team building days, firm-wide townhalls, promotional celebrations and our impressive mid-year and end of financial year celebrations… each experience is designed to build a fun and uplifting environment.

Employee spotlight

It can say many things about your workplace when people choose to leave. But what does it say when they seek to return?

You could ask HBA Special Counsel Natasha Fiodoroff. Natasha spent seven years with HBA, before working 9 months at a competitor firm. In 2023 she returned. And Natasha is not the only one …

“I didn’t leave HBA because I was unhappy. I actually loved the culture and the people, but at that time in my life I felt I needed a change.

My time away gave me similar professional experience, but what I realised firsthand was that firm culture is everything in terms of how you feel on a Sunday night, looking ahead to the week.

Working at HBA just doesn’t feel like some other firms; it’s hard to describe. But what I can tell you is that it’s genuinely supportive, inclusive, flexible and has great clients with high quality work”

opportunities for Young lawyers

Enabling the next generation of exceptional lawyers

“I’ve been lucky enough to work at HBA for nine years. I started as a paralegal while I was studying law in Newcastle and today, I am a senior associate in Sydney. During my time at HBA, I’ve learned a lot, worked with a great team and had the opportunity to take on new challenges and expand my practice in areas I find fulfilling. The best thing about working at HBA is the people – I’ve always felt trusted, supported and encouraged to grow.”Emily Gibson.

Your everyday reality is an intimate setting, fostering an environment of dedication, personalised learning and unique experiences that compliments your education. Whether you’ve completed your Practical Legal Training or are still working towards it, you’ll find an open and collaborative environment that encourages fresh thinking and helps you grow with confidence.

We do this by bridging the gap between theory and practice and offering practical experience in both legal and business environments, giving you the chance to explore different areas of work and understand where your interests lie.

Throughout your placement, you’ll work closely with approachable and experienced teams, build skills that complement your academic learning, and form connections that can support your future career, or lead to opportunities within HBA.

We partner with universities across Australia and are open to working with institutions with formal placement programs.

The undersung benefits of a smaller firm

Think values-based pricing is just about clients? Think again. We focus on efficiency and outcomes, not how long someone spends at their desk. Under the illusion that a smaller firm means less stimulating work? That’s not the case at HBA where you’ll enjoy working on matters and with clients that you might typically only expect to find at the “big name” firms.

  • The undersung benefits of a smaller firm

    Values-based pricing

Offering alternative pricing is not just about our clients.

It means we are focused on efficiency and outcomes, not how many hours someone spends at their desk.

We see alternative pricing as an enabler to flexibility.

  • The undersung benefits of a smaller firm

    Not a traditional equity partnership

The business model that priorities partner profit above all else often threatens jobs in times of economic challenge. There is no question that sustainable business models provide the greatest job security.

HBA Legal Pty Ltd is an incorporated legal practice (ILP). While equity partnerships constantly strip the bank account dry at end of the financial year, allocating all profit to equity partners, our model ensures money is always left in the kitty for a rainy day, and/ or investment back into our firm.

  • The undersung benefits of a smaller firm

Small firm does not equal mundane work

You will work on cases and with clients that you might typically only expect to find at the “big name” firms.

HBA is appointed to the Whole of Australian Government Legal panel and acts for several government departments (as well as some state governments). The corporates we work with are amongst Australia’s most well-known brands. HBA is also entrenched within the London insurance market (including Lloyd’s of London) and highly-respected by brokers and underwriters placing risk in Australia.

At HBA you receive all the cultural benefits of a smaller firm, while also being professionally fulfilled with stimulating matters that will evolve your career.
