Deceased patient’s husband threatens proceedings against public hospital
HBA Legal represented a public hospital in coronial investigations concerning the suicide of a mental health patient after discharge from hospital.
The patient had a number of physical and mental health issues (including bulimia) which damaged her teeth and necessitated their removal. The patient underwent a diagnostic coronary angiography for myocardial ischaemia at a health facility; a fragment of the guide wire was negligently left in the patient who discovered it protruding from her chest. This may have exacerbated her psychiatric condition.
She tragically committed suicide by taking an overdose of prescription medication. The patient’s husband brought a complaint and threatened proceedings against two different health facilities and sought an inquest.
HBA successfully navigated resolution of all issues between our client and the patient’s husband, without the need for a full inquest hearing.
